Republic Services and Recology
We are pleased to announce that Republic Services and Recology Silicon Valley have entered into a partnership that will result in Republic Services taking over collection of Recology’s business interests in San Jose. This decision is based on the City of San Jose recently awarding an exclusive waste and recycling commercial collection franchise to Republic Services, effective July 1, 2012, in an effort to increase recycling diversion, streamline collection rates and decrease carbon impacts to the City.
This early transition means your new service will be established and tailored to your company's needs well before July 1, 2012. We expect this transition to be seamless for our customers and enhance our ability to serve you. You will continue to receive the same great service from professional employees.
Facts about your new service:
- Service begins February 1, 2012
- You will receive an invoice from Republic Services on or around January 31, 2012 for February 2012 services. Services for January 2012 have been/will be billed by Recology. (All invoicing going forward will be from Republic Services).
- For now your collection day and onsite containers will remain the same. Changes may be implemented in 2012 to enhance your services.
- Please use our W-9 form (download pdf) for your convenience. Please submit to your Accounts Payable team so Republic Services may be recognized as a new vendor for your company. For electronic payment options, visit our bill payment options page.

Frequently Asked Questions
When will this change go into effect?
Will my collection rates increase?
Not necessarily. Your rates will remain the same at this time. City-wide rates will be established this Spring and customers will be informed of the new cost structure in advance of the July 1, 2012 start date.
Will I continue to receive a bill from Recology?
No, all invoicing going forward will be from Republic Services. You will receive one invoice on or around January 31, 2012 for February services.
Will my services (day, time, levels) change?
There is a possibility you may have service day/time changes as Republic Services establishes effective service routes. Republic Services will be working with businesses prior to the start date to assess any needs in service level changes.
Will I be receiving a new bin or cart?
No. We will be acquiring the bins/carts from Recology and plan to keep the containers in place so there will be no disruption in service. If we notice any issues with a container we will schedule the necessary repair or replacement.
When will you have my service information available?
We should have all the data transferred into our system by the week of January 30, 2012.
Do I have to use Republic Services for all my waste needs?
No, the new franchise does affect the majority of solid waste, organics and recyclables but there are some exceptions like:
- C&D (Construction/Demolition)
- Medical & Hazardous waste
- Confidential shredding services
